Abyss farming in PoE 3.29 offers stronger rewards after the changes in patches 3.29.1 and 3.29.2, but profit still depends on completing encounters efficiently and keeping map costs under control. Improved chest rewards, three reward chests from Abyssal Depths bosses, and increased item quantity from elite Abyss monsters give the strategy more earning potential. Your POE currency budget should cover a repeatable map setup before you increase spending on scarabs.
Which reward changes affect your farming plan
Patch 3.29.1 improved Abyss chest reward quality and quantity, with particular attention to currency and scarabs. It also reduced variation in chest drop amounts and gave Abyssal Depths bosses three reward chests. These changes make completing encounters and entering available Depths more worthwhile, although individual runs can still produce different results.
Patch 3.29.2 increased the quantity of items dropped by defeated elite Abyss monsters. That adds value to the monsters encountered along the route, alongside the final reward. The practical priority is to finish each Abyss reliably: extra monsters offer little benefit when your character cannot clear them quickly enough to complete the encounter.
Build the Atlas around encounters you can finish
A focused Abyss Atlas tree should support encounter frequency, monster density, and rewards while retaining enough map support to keep the farm running. Atlas passives are the progression bonuses that shape what appears in your maps and how rewarding those encounters become. Invest in the main Abyss cluster and relevant nearby passives before spreading points across unrelated mechanics.
During Atlas completion, map support and Kirac passives can help maintain your supply while you develop the Abyss specialization. A character with limited maps benefits from that foundation before committing more resources to each run. Once supply becomes consistent, additional investment can follow the part of the strategy that needs improvement.
Choose maps where you can follow the moving Abyss comfortably and clear its successive pits without frequent interruptions. Fast area damage helps handle dense groups, while survivability keeps dangerous encounters from consuming portals and time. A slower character should use manageable map modifiers and controlled movement rather than adding more difficulty simply to raise the displayed quantity.
Match scarab spending to your actual returns
Abyss scarabs should reinforce the Atlas bonuses you have selected. Their effects vary, so choose them by the encounters or monster density they add to your setup. Adding encounters also adds time to a map, which means a more expensive setup needs enough extra rewards to justify both its cost and its longer completion time.
Roll maps for item quantity only when your build can handle the resulting modifiers. Quantity supports general drops, while suitable pack size effects increase the monsters available to defeat. Read the modifiers before opening the map; a setup that repeatedly slows your character or causes deaths can lose the value gained from higher rewards.
Track several completed runs together instead of judging the strategy by one valuable drop. Record map preparation costs, scarab costs, completion time, and the rewards you can realistically sell or use. This gives you a practical basis for deciding whether to add investment, keep the same setup, or reduce costs.
Keep map supply in that calculation. Atlas map support, Kirac, Voidstones, and map quantity all contribute to sustaining the route, but a stronger Atlas does not guarantee that every run replaces its own map. Build a reserve before raising your spending. Include any expense associated with Path of exile currency for sale in your overall budget, then run a consistent batch of maps and use the recorded returns to choose your next scarab setup.
